O'Connor, who many Topekans have seen dance over the years in "The Nutcracker" and other Ballet Midwest productions, ultimately decided his casting call was to the role of a Roman Catholic priest. Kent O'Connor sits on a sofa in the living room of the southwest Topeka home of his parents, Tom and Marilyn O'Connor. Ordained last November as a Roman Catholic deacon, O'Connor today will be ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. Topeka is O'Connor's hometown. The fourth child of Washburn University biology professor Dr. Tom O'Connor and his wife, Marilyn, recalls first thinking about becoming a priest when he was in second or third grade at Most Pure Heart of Mary School. However, another dream already was in the young boy's mind after at age 7 he saw "The Nutcracker. After graduating from Topeka West High School inO'Connor pursued dance at The University of Kansas, but it was there that he also deepened his religious life as part of the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center at Elwiki 4th job priest nutcracker. As a deacon, O'Connor could preach the Gospel and perform baptisms and weddings. The discipline and physical health of years of dance also have helped, he said, adding he usually can summon up a certain amount of poise in most situations.
